Along with this passion for little ones, she has also been fascinated by the role of mothers and wanted to support mothers through their pregnancies and childbirth. The miracle of being there for the arrival of a new life has inspired Sarah and fueled her aspirations to become a midwife. She actually began dreaming about her career when she was a young girl, imagining herself caring for her siblings and nursing their health when they were sick or injured. Today, those make-believe games and daydreams are a reality.

Sarah and her parents moved around the United States, seeking an opportunity in the mission field that matched her family’s desire to serve others. When she was five years old, they landed in China and became the first family of foreigners in a little city called Fushun, located in Northern China. Their family bond thrived, and Sarah grew extremely close to her family.

Several years after arriving in China, Sarah’s parents opened an orphanage near Beijing to serve abandoned children. While obtaining her formal education from Chinese and international schools, she remained active in assisting her parents with the orphanages and fulfilled her passion as a nurturer. She often insisted that her parents begin to accept more premature infants that she spent much time nurturing back to health.

After many years serving the people of China, the Baker’s decided to return to California to allow Sarah to graduate from an American high school and to regroup as a family. While Sarah was in California, she found an avenue that would allow her to carry out her true passion; midwifery. An invitation to a friend’s birth gave Sarah a glimpse into the work that she would dedicate her life to.

Assisting a midwife deliver her friend’s baby and her being surrounded by the comfort and support of loved ones fascinated and inspired Sarah. She knew, from that day, that she would spend her life growing close to her clients and their families, welcoming new life into the world and offering prayers to the families she works with. Becoming a midwife was at the very core of her heart.

Soon, Sarah was enrolled in a program called ”Mercy in Action,” which is associated with the National College of Midwifery in Boise, Idaho. The curriculum specializes in training and certifying woman to become midwives who desire to use their skills and training to support the strong need in Developing countries. After finishing her studies in Boise, Sarah headed off to the Philippines to finish the second portion of her training.

To support the strong need, Sarah and her colleagues lived at the clinic assisting women with their personal health and delivering babies. It was here that she quickly developed her skills and strong confidence while confronting a wide range of circumstances, many of which were considered very high risk due to malnutrition and poor living conditions. Within her year and a half tenure in the Philippines, Sarah delivered over 160 babies. This experience afforded her the skills and confidence that most programs are unable to offer midwives. Sarah then returned to the United States to take her CPM board examinations and became officially certified with NARM, North American Registry of Midwives.

Sarah then returned to China to practice midwifery to become one of two foreign midwives in Beijing, China. She was immediately in high demand from expatriates who requested her assistance in their pregnancies and deliveries. Even international hospitals hired Sarah to teach prenatal and birthing classes to expectant families. Her fluency in Mandarin Chinese helped her communicate with a variety of patients and allowed her to comfort them in their native language.

While Sarah was busy delivering babies and assisting growing families, she met Drew Jones, a Texas A&M University graduate who was working to build the United States Embassy. Drew began pursuing Sarah by requesting opportunities to volunteer at her parents’ orphanage. Before he ever made it to the orphanage to volunteer, they were dating and falling in love. Sarah and Drew moved to Texas and got married in April of 2008.

Sarah became licensed through the Association of Texas Midwives and is now a midwife in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, and a staff midwife at Gentle Beginnings Birth Center in Hurst, Texas. Sarah and Drew hope to one day venture off to other developing countries where they can open clinics that will offer the needed support for women who face oppression and abuse.

Given her long journey to practicing midwifery in Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas, it is obvious that Sarah has a deep passion for helping families and providing exceptional, personalized care to women. She would love the opportunity to meet you and discuss ways that she can make your pregnancy and delivery a healthy, happy and heartfelt experience.
