Doula Kit

Warning: This does not take the place of medical advice, these are only tools to help a client who is already under good medical care.

Marjarum (Reduces pains from contractions while making the contractions more effective, afterbirth pains)

How to use: aroma therapy- 10-15 drops in the diffuser, or 2-3drops mixed with 1Tbsp of carrier oil and rub on belly

Geranium (Stabilizes vitals, eases breathing, calming in labor or during high stress, UTI, infections, natural antibiotic, jaundice, hemorrhoids, postpartum blues)

How to use: aroma therapy- 10-15 drops in the diffuser, or 2-3drops mixed with carrier oil and rub on bottom of feet and other areas of the body as needed

For Mom and Doula

Clary sage (Brings milk supply in quicker and fuller, post partum blues, small doses postpartum only, postdates to start labor, aids cervical dilation)

How to use in labor: sniff through 3 contractions, or mix 1 drop with carrier oil and rub into the bottom of the feet (1 drop in bath) if mom has an aversion to the smell

How to use for bringing milk: 1 drop in a carrier oil and rub under arm pits

Caution: DO NOT use in pregnancy or with children, do not excess 2 drops in a day

Fennel (Pain relief, increases milk supply along with Basil, hormonal acne, fluid retention from PMS, balances hormones, gas pains, and indigestion)

How to use: mix 2drops with 1tbls of carrier oil and rub on area that is having pain

Caution: Not to be used in pregnancy, children, or epileptic, (no longer then 2 days)

Nutmeg (Supports adrenal system, helping with fatigue and blood sugar levels)

How to use: aroma therapy- 10-15 drops in the diffuser, or mix 4drops with 1tbls of carrier oil and rub into the adrenal areas

Lavender (Relaxes muscles and takes the edge off pain)

How to use: 10 drops mixed with 1/2cup of Epson salts in bath, rub 2 drops on the bottom of the feet, wear as a perfume.

Rosewood (Lack of progress, fear or tension)

How to use: aroma therapy- 10-15 drops in the diffuser, or sniff through 2-3 contractions.

Whispering Hope (Feeling hopeless, good for transition)

How to use: aroma therapy- 10-15 drops in the diffuser, or sniff through 2-3 contractions, place on ear lobes, wear as perfume.

Essential Oil Class hand out

Essential Oils

Safety Warning: Always consult with your midwife or health care provider before starting these oils so that you know when and how to use them safely for you as an individual.  Especially if you are pregnant or nursing or are a prescription medication.

Here are some of the most commonly used oils in my practice as a midwife.  There is an oil name and a list of its properties and benefits.  This does not take the place of good healthy nutrition and lifestyle.  However, I have seen these oils do amazing things in my own family and with clients when used properly.

Be sure to use carefully and get specific instructions on when and how to use these if you are pregnant, Nursing or when using them on an infant or child.

These are the class notes from the essential oil work shop I teach.  In class we go over instructions on how to use these safely and know hows.

Baby me (Improves tissue elasticity, diaper rash, preventing stretch marks, perinial support and massage to prevent a tear, menstrual or after birth cramps, helps stabilize low blood sugar, depression and baby blues, reduces wrinkles, for sensitive skin, sciatica)

How to use: Use 1-3 drops mixed in ½ to 1 Tbsp of carrier oil and massage on abdominal area, breast or other areas where it is needed. Only use 1 drop and dilute well when using it for perinial massage or for diaper rash.

Breezy (Chest colds, excellent for coughs, asthma, safe in pregnancy after 36 weeks)

How to use: 2-3 drops mixed in 1 Tbsp of carrier oil massage on chest and back to cover lung area, can diffuse 10-15 drops at night in your diffuser.

Cloves (Adrenal support/ healing. Use 3 drops with carrier oil and massage on adrenals and place a heat compress for 20 min 1-2xday. Kills plaque on teeth, one drop to tooth paste or baking soda)

Cypress (Works together with Vitality for Toxemia, strengthens vein walls for varicose veins)

How to use:  Massage 2 drops mixed in a carrier oil near effected area–Talk to your midwife before using.

Delicate (Cradle cap, skin rashes, hair loss)

How to use: Use 1-3 drops mixed in ½  Tbsp of carrier oil and massage on scalp  or other area needed. Only use one drop mixed in carrier with babies.  Can add to shampoo too.

Deliverance (Anti-bacterial, fungal, viral. Infections of almost any kind, colds and sore throats)

How to use: Use 1-3 drops mixed in ½ Tbsp of carrier oil and massage into bottoms of the feet or lymphatic regions, 1 drop on Q-Tip rub on tonsils for sore throat, or 1 drop on temples for head aches.

Geranium (Stabilizes vitals, homeostatic, calming in labor or during high stress, UTI, infections, natural antibiotic, jaundice, heals endometrial tissue, hemorrhoids, and postpartum blues)

How to use: aroma therapy- 10-15 drops in the diffuser, or 2-3drops mixed with ½ Tbsp carrier oil and rub on bottom of feet and other areas of the body

Helichrysum (Reduces scar tissue, pooling of blood in varicose veins, re-establishes blood flow to traumatized areas for bruising or hematomas, natural sunscreen with coconut oil, lymph drainage, anti inflammatory good for arthritis and sciatica, use cautiously while pregnant, not for use in small children)

How to use: Use 1-2 drops mixed in ½ to 1 Tbsp of carrier oil and massage on varicose veins or area of concern, discuss with midwife before use.

Inside out (Intestinal upsets, diarrhea, gas, bloating, food poisoning, constipation, morning sickness, parasites, reflux, and colic)

How to use: Use 1-3 drops mixed in ½ to 1 Tbsp of carrier oil and massage on abdominal area.

Lavender (Sleep aide and relaxation, great labor support, reduces scarring, insect repellant or bites, infant fever reducer)

How to use: 10- 15 drops in a Diffuser, 10drops mixed with 1/2cup of Epson salts in bath, 1-2 drops mixed in carrier oil as a massage oil, neck, back, feet, behind ears and so on.

Melissa (Flu, hypertension, palpitations, shock, allergies, asthma, bronchitis, chronic coughs, colds, and cold sore blisters, Herpes, HPV))

How to use: 1-3 drops mixed in ½ to 1 Tbsp of carrier oil, massage where needed, and consult with midwife for where to place it.

Millenia (Helps body align “chiropractor in a bottle”, hold adjustments better, after birth or menstrual cramping, closing the cervix preterm, reduces postpartum bleeding, sciatica, don’t use after 37 week of pregnancy, can resume use after the baby is born and placenta is expelled. Helps fold and form the uterus, realign hips and pelvic structure. Also use in prevention of cavities)

How to use: 2-3 drops mix with ½ to 1 Tbsp carrier oil.  Massage in area needed, check with midwife.

No more (Fungal infections, athlete’s foot, nail fungus, yeast)

How to use: 1-3 drops mixed in a carrier oil on area of fungal growth

Oregano (Anti-bacterial, immune support, Group B Strep prevention and treatment)

How to use: 1-2 drops with carrier oil on bottoms of the feet; 1 drop mixed in ¼ cup carrier vaginally during perineal massage.

Simplicity (Herpes, HPV—use with Melissa)

How to use: Talk to your midwife before using

Vitality (High BP, sciatica, varicosities)

How to use: Talk to your midwife before using

Whispering Hope (feeling hopeless, depression, suicidal thoughts, wear as a perfume, place on ear lobes, diffuser, this is not a substitute for therapy or medication for those who need it)

How to use: sniff through 2-3 contractions

Here are some common uses:

Allergies (Breezy, Aspire, Lavender, Melissa, Chamomile Roman–diffuse, inhale, dilute and wear, chest and back)

After Birth/ Menstrual Cramps (Millenia and Majorum—use with Geranium to Heal the endometrial lining)

Colic (Inside out, Tranquility, Chamomile Roman–dilute and apply to stomach and back)

Cold Sore (Deliverance or Melissa)

Constipation (Inside out, ginger–2 drops mixed in carrier on stomach or bottom of the feet)

Cough / Colds (Frankincense-respiratory relief, Melissa, lemon, Tranquility, Deliverance if infected, Breezy @ term, Lemon)

Cord Care: (Frankincense 2xday, falls off within 3-5 days)

Deodorant (Purify, Deliverance, Cedarwood @ term, Sunburst)

Diaper rash (Baby me–1 drop Lavender and Chamomile Roman mixed with carrier)

Diarrhea (Inside out, ginger)

Earache (Chamomile Roman, Lavender, Tea tree, thyme, or garlic–dilute all of them very well, especially garlic as it can burn the inner ear if not diluted well, use 1-2 drops of diluted oil on a cotton ball and place at opening of ear canal, rub a few more drops behind the ear.)

Fever (Lavender-dilute with carrier oil and massage the baby—cover back of neck, feet, and behind the ears)

Flu (Melissa, Deliverance, Inside Out, EZ Traveler, Cedarwood which dissolves mucous @ term. Breezy @ term)

Headaches (Peppermint, EZ Traveler, Millenia, MyGraine, Deliverance)

Heartburn (Inside out, lemon juice and peppermint, ginger)

Hypoglycemia (Baby Me and Deliverance)

IBS (Inside out, Revitalize)

Insect bites / repellant (Purify, Away, Citronella, Peppermint)

Jaundice (Geranium, Lemon, lime, Mandarin, or rosemary—dilute and apply on the liver area of the feet or baby’s abdomen)

Postpartum Acne (Fennel–avoid in pregnancy, helps reduce pain in labor, increases milk supply along with Basil)

Postpartum Blues (Tranquility, Geranium, Whispering Hope)

Scarring (Baby Me, Geranium, Helichrysum, Lavender, rosewood, apply often)

Sciatica (Baby Me, Millenia, Vitality—massage effected area, use compress, or in bath)

Swelling (Lemon–place over the kidneys with a warm compress for pregnancy swelling, increase fluids)

Sore/ Strep throat (Frankincense, Melissa, or deliverance–1 drop on Q-Tip rub on tonsils)

UTI (Geranium and Cedarwood)

Stretch Marks (Baby Me—dilute with a carrier oil such as Vit E or something with Jojoba, apricot or avocado works well)

Stress (Tranquility or Kadence–helps to relieve exhaustion body and mind, relieves worry, stress, physical weakness, dizziness, vertigo, helps increase focus, and aides recovery from extended illness)

Varicose or Spider Veins (Helichrysum—regenerates damaged tissue and dissolves clots and pooled blood in and around the vein; cypress layered with Helichrysum—to heal while improving circulation; Vitatlity—to improve circulation; Warmdown—dilute and massage into leg muscle to relieve pain and heavy sensation; Visability—specific for spider veins.

Caution: When large, swollen veins are present, always massage above the vein and move upward.

Vitamin/ Mineral Absorption (Eternity, EZ Traveler, Eternity)

Warts (Deliverence, Clove, Melissa—rub 1-2 drops directly on wart)

Yeast/ Thrush (Candila, no more, inside out)

Family Kit: Essential Oils

Here are some of the most commonly used oils in my practice as a midwife.  There is an oil name and a list of its properties and benefits.  This does not take the place of good healthy nutrition and lifestyle.  However, I have seen these oils do amazing things in my own family and with clients when used properly.

Good carrier oils include: coconut oil, almond oil, grape seed oil, calendula oil and vit E oil.  The latter two are great for skin issues.

Diffusing oils: use 10-15 drops in a diffuser or humidifier to get the oil in the air for aromatherapy.  Great when kids are sick or need help focusing.  Can also put on a cotton ball and a zip lock to carry in your purse to smell as needed.

Bath: use 4-10 drops mixed in Epsom salt to mix in the bath for relaxation and sickness or immune support.

Millenia (Helps the body align “chiropractor in a bottle”, hold adjustments better, after birth or menstrual cramping, reduces postpartum bleeding, sciatica, don’t use after 37 week of pregnancy as it can keep the cervix closed, can resume use after the baby is born and placenta is expelled. Realigns hips and pelvic structure, headaches. Also use in prevention of cavities) How to use: Adults: 2-3 drops mix with or with out  ½ to 1 Tbsp carrier oil.  Massage in area needed. Children: always start with 1-2 drops and mix in a carrier oil to be sure they are not sensitive to it.

Purify (Insect bite and repellant; kills germs, removes odors, kills mildew, mold, fungus, also used on dental abscesses, toothaches)  Use 1 drop directly on a insect bite or 2-3 drops mixed in carrier oil massage over body to prevent bug bites.  Can use 10-15 drops in a diffuser as well.  No more then 2-3 drops in a bath.  Add 6-10 drops in a spray bottle mixed with one part water one part vinegar.

Lemon (Improves clarity of mind and the attention span, and great for studying.  Greatly improves respiratory health such as asthma, bronchitis, sore throats and sinusitis.  Improves lymphatic drainage, and cleanses the liver, stimulates the pancreas and entire endocrine system. Purifies water helpful for passing gallstones and aiding an over due woman to go into labor. Reduces swelling. Great for cleaning and aromatherapy.) Use 1-2 drops on the kidney area for swelling.  10 drops mixed in half a bottle of 1 part vinegar 1 part water for natural cleaner.  2-3 drops on the chest for respiratory infection can mix in a carrier if desired.  Don’t expose the area to the sun immediately after applying it.  Can use in a diffuser as well while your children do home work.
